my forest, the Modoc, is pretty busy. about a thousand lightning strikes last week, with most resources already committed to the yosemite rim fire. got a splash of rain from the thunderheads so no big problem, just a lot of work to put the snags out before it gets dry enough for them to spread.

ALTURAS, Calif., Aug. 21, 2013 – Firefighters have been dispatched to new smoke reports this evening near the Timber Mountain area, northwest of Canby on the Doublehead Ranger District. Nearly 1,000 lightning strikes occurred across the Modoc National Forest Wednesday.

The fucking idiot who shot the last white wolf in Yellowstone National Park should be put away.

"California wildfire containment efforts complicated by 'crown fire' [...]
The fire caused the closure of the White Wolf area of the park on its western side, said Yosemite spokesman Tom Medema.

The lone white wolf living in Yellowstone National Park, seen here, was shot in April and euthanized Friday after efforts to help her

May 13 (UPI) -- Officials at Yellowstone National Park said a rare female white wolf had to be euthanized Friday after she was found shot, and the incident is being treated as a crime.

National Park Service officers said the wolf .. https://www.eastidahonews.com/2017/05/officials-well-known-wolf-yellowstone-shot-killed/ , which was the only white wolf believed to be presently living in the park, was shot on April 10 or 11. She was found by a group of hikers who called park rangers. Efforts to help the animal recover were ultimately unsuccessful and she was put down Friday.

The wolf had become well-known to rangers and visitors .. https://tinyurl.com/k9mobnz .. because she, like most wolves, was not skittish around people. She had lived to the age of 12, nearly twice the age wolves normally live in the wild. She gave birth to 20 pups, 14 of which survived into adulthood.

The National Parks Service Investigative Service Branch is offering a $5,000 reward for information that leads to the identity of the shooter. Tips can be submitted anonymously by calling (888) 653-0009 or emailing nps_isp@nps.gov.

Thank goodness there are more good people working to save endangered animals than there are fucking idiots who don't give a shit about ruining all that is good about this earth we are
so lucky to have landed on. How so many can be so callous and uncaring will always be a mystery to me. Then again we are simply another species of animal, Right. Still, it hurts terribly.
