I also agree that AMD64 is not innovative, rather incremental improvement on existing technology. (That is always how it has been positioned, too.) It is, however, the solution which works better for most people.

You are correct, but Intel chose to be a fast follower of x64, rather than holding onto their IPF sacred cow. Even now, IPF is replacing RISC installations, but not really offering anything that an x86 installation would want to upgrade to. And this probably won't change anytime soon.

There is something to be said for a company who pioneers risky technology, but isn't afraid to be a fast follower when their bet doesn't pan out.
