CHIP GIANT Intel said it has won a deal to supply a 180 processor cluster consisting of 74 two way Itanium 2s to the Swedish Royal Institute of Technology.
The deal also includes 16 two way Itanium 2 workstations, but all the kit is HP's – the two way servers being the RX2600S range the workstations the ZX6000.
The institute will use the big cluster to study life science, chemistry, astrophysics, materials science and other disciplines, Intel said.
La Intella promises that there will be other announcements like this over the next few weeks, particularly though its favourite partner, Hewlett Packard.
The final systems will go live this summer, but Intel said that the capacity may well triple over the next year. The systems will also be incorporated in the Swedish scientific computing grid, SWEGRID.
The Itaniums will boot out old systems used by the Parallel Data Centre, which is also set to link the new systems to CERN and the UK's e-science programme. µ
