It is kind of interesting to note that this discussion has gone to hell and turned quasi-personal very fast, after the two people this idea was introduced because of, showed up.
Not sure if that's my fault, a coincidence, or them proving why the idea has been being pushed to me so hard.

Cassie and Once don't want private boards. Others welcome it as long as the main board stays....

The ultimate solution would be to keep the boards the way they are and teach a few select folks self-control and effective use of the filtering function. Not sure if I can pull that kind of miracle, though.
