PE verses NPE
The whole idea and the way it plays out in the press, is that somehow, a NPE owning a patent is really just trying to get money for something they did not develop and therefore do not deserve anything for it; so we call them 'trolls' and vilify them.
A PE is treated like they do deserve something for the technology or product. Even a company, like WDDD, that did patent and has a product, are depicted and treated like a NPE in the press because they are not as big as ATVI with the technology.
The problem with these views is that it makes it look like it you steal a new product or technology fast enough, is that the patent holders are not supposed to get anything for their IP. The problem is that if this is the way things do start to play out in the future, there will be less incentive to develop new products or new technology.
Why do extra work when others can steal it? Making new stuff is much harder than copying the work of others.
as an example, think of how ATVI would react if WDDD copied their game franchise line and paid nothing to ATVI?
