I think it depends on a LOT of factors.

As ng says, going rates have settled around $10 for workmen. Even most fast food joints are paying upward of $7 an hour.

Still, it's not a living wage for anyone, but "live at home" students. Few who make that amount of money will have much to show for it. How can anyone live on $58 minus taxes and FICA?

I'd pay higher than the going rates and base it on merit and efficient management. I'd make one's wages contingent directly on a percentage and I wouldn't be a cheapskate with a high producer.

If you want respect and loyalty as an employer you gotta share the wealth.
