My take is when the studios, Sony, Turner, et al think that VOD is profitable they will band together and do it themselves shutting us, NetFlix, and everyone else out. They have the film in the cans. We don't. They are already charging Starz big licensing fees for some of the flicks they are showing on Starz Ticket on Real Player. That's what Hastings is getting at about them holding off for now. The studios are holding the flicks/licensing for big ransom.

fringe, I don't think Hastings is really trying to protect anything... I think he's just dealing with the reality that DVD rentals will be strong for a few years yet. NFLX will be ready to roll with VOD as soon as it becomes profitable (and the licensing issues are taken care of).

It is good that GZFX is ready to go with VOD too, but we shouldn't think NFLX is any less ready. Don't sell Hastings too short. Blockbuster did. Look at 'em now.

I don't worry too much either way - I'm as heavy in NFLX now as I am GZFX. I have no doubt I'll make a lot more in the short run with the latter. Long run... I dunno. GZFX has no real management track record.
