Why are we taught to love, feel compassion, be honest and kind, turn the other cheek, be loyal, have honor, etc.



Because it's the right thing to do? ;)
To get a glimpse of what we really are and meant to be, I think we have to look at the newly born child. Despite having been exposed in utero to the environment we find ourselves trying to survive in, the newborn is unconditioned and open to whatever greeted with ready to respond. Ready to engage in their new world. We, like primates and many other mammals, are social animals that have learned to work together for survival. Remember:)

What traits are we born with, what's our natural state? A feral child doesn't have most if not all of those traits. We don't learn them if we are not taught.
