I have sort of an antonymous story to that one. In the post Title X world, girls got the right to compete in any sport if they so desired.
My elder daughter is a gifted athlete, three sport star, she pitched on a fast-pitch high school team that didn't lose a regular season game in all four years she started on it. But she wasn't the only gifted one on that team... another girl, cuter than a bug but a little more muscular than my willow-like daughter, had her sights set on playing high school football. She wanted to be a linebacker. No being a kicker for her, she wanted to prove she was tough. Due to mainly just raw talent, and unusual speed and quickness, she made the team. Her parents were supportive, but at about that age boys get faster and stronger than the girls generally (there are exceptions)...
She ran back a kick-off in a game against another team, the other team was drop-jawed that a girl was playing against them... she got hit by three guys at once, at the knees, and one knee bent backward, opposite of the way it was designed to go. It took cadaver parts to rebuild her knee. She sat out for a year before she returned to softball, and never played football again. (she ended up playing college ball, finishing her career as an outfielder for the University of Hawaii)
The point of debate for years was whether they should have protected her from a contact sport with larger stronger guys, or let her get demolished by them. To this day, i am not so sure that protecting her from harm wouldn't have been a better idea, but then, her dream would have been crushed. A tough call for a parent.
