Josh Barnett defeated Randy Couture TKO 2R (Strikes)
Though the fight lasted less than two rounds, it was an explosive affair to say the least. Couture, the defending heavyweight champ fighting out of Gresham, OR, engaged Barnett right off the bat and rammed him into the fence. Couture head butted Barnett, though it clearly was unintentional, even though referee Big John McCarthy didn't catch it. While the two huge fighters clinched against the fence, the two traded weak uppercuts but solid knees to the stomach. Couture then slammed Barnett to the mat and wound up in Josh's guard. Randy slipped over to a ½ guard, landed a solid right hand, then stood up, away from Barnett. After a slapping kick to Barnett's thigh, Couture dove right back into Barnett's guard. After a few decent strikes, The Natural connected with a huge right square on Josh's face, followed by another. The Baby-Faced Assassin, fighting from Seattle, WA, took the shots well, rolled to his side and tried to secure and arm bar, but missed. After a failed heel hook by Barnett, he worked his way back up to his feet and clinched with Couture again. Once again against the fence, the two traded knees until the round ended. What a way to start off the main event!
Josh was breathing heavy in between rounds and there appeared to be a sense of urgency in his corner. It looked as if the end was surprisingly near for the young challenger, but he would soon prove everybody wrong. When round two began, the two heavyweights again clinched and wound up against the fence. Couture, however, wasted no time in taking Barnett down, into his guard. Almost immediately, Couture passed the guard and fully mounted Barnett and tried to ground and pound. Couture has taken out several fighters from this position before, including Pedro Rizzo and Kevin Randleman, so almost everybody in attendance felt the end was near. Barnett's savvy defense, however, prevented Couture from mounting an all-out assault and soon Couture was only in a half mount. Barnett was able to land about 4 hard elbows while on his back, halting any offense from Randy. Moments later, Josh rolled out the side door, scooted around in front of Couture, now on his elbows and knees, and took his back. From there, Barnett delivered several telling blows, forcing the defending champ to roll onto his side against the fence. Barnett unfurled a vicious flurry of punches, but none seemed to find a home until Josh unleashed three huge elbows on Couture's face and forehead. In serious peril, Couture had no answer and after dozens of elbows and punches rained down (and though not all landed cleanly), referee John McCarthy stepped in to stop it at 4:25 of the second round. Barnett instantly got up, did his routine throat-slash gesture and jumped onto the fence, joyful that he is the new heavyweight champ.
Randy slowly got up, realizing defeat for the first time in the Octagon and, like a true sportsman, congratulated Barnett. Josh answered a lot of critics' questions tonight as he defeated one of the greatest fighters in UFC history and became the youngest heavyweight champ in the organization's history as well. Though it was relatively short, it was an instant classic. The fact that a new champion was born is a plus, too. Barnett raises his UFC record to 4-1, but Couture falls to 7-1.
