Speaking about eavesdropping on people - remember in 1994 Harrison Ford starred in this movie called Clear and Present Danger. They used a technology in the movie that was being used only at the time against the drug war. They would capture phone numbers of suspected areas (not callers) and as most people did not have cell phones back then they could go to any baby bell and say we want this block or this area and want every single number being called (from and to). They would then be able to capture with algorithms calls made to know drug dealers out of the country and within the country. Out of the country cell phones were more prevalent and analog was only available to being able to listen to cell phone calls were a piece of cake.
During that movie they played a cell phone call intercepted from one of the Presidents advisors to a known drug kingpin. I was shocked when I saw that as this software was only available for less than a year and only for the governments use.
