#1471 RE: OldAIMGuy #1469

I'm happy to report that the SHO is running its butt off now!

Turned out that both the factory service manual and one of the pages from the Chilton were both wrong on the number of the coil pack posts. Car was running but not well, then I found a page in the Chilton that said that the coil towers were numbered (they're not) but also showed 4 of the towers wired differently. I moved those wires appropriately, turned the key expecting more snorting and rough running, but it started immediately like a new car.

Took it for a test-drive, and it's pulling much harder than it ever had since I bought it. The back 3 plug wires were all bad when I got it, so firing usually but not always. And the timing belt was so old I'm sure the cam timing was retarded a bit.

Not so anymore. Not hearing a misfire anywhere and it'll light 'em up with just throttle in 2nd gear.

I'm killing it more frequently in standing starts, but my guess is that with the cam timing correct, it's got less torque right off idle and I just need to get used to it again.

Since I know now that this car's running well, I'll be filling out the paperwork for my first two driving schools Monday and take this one. No truck, no trailer, no nothing. Just drive up there with a jack, a torque wrench, spare tire, and lug socket. Should be sweet.

I think my first one is in Topeka 3 weekends from this one and in Omaha 2 weekends after that. Rather than about $1k worth of tires and brakes for the Mustang for each weekend, I should end up just paying for fuel and lodging. Much cheaper.

Oh, and what do you think of this idea? My wife said if I wanted to, I can use hers on the track. That could be fun even though it's an automatic. But it got me to thinking...

With the attendance at these schools dropping, I'd love to put my cars to use for attendees who otherwise wouldn't go. So, I'm thinking a big 4-car trailer (2 Stangs and 2 SHOs) and rent out whichever cars I'm not personally using at the events. Maybe?

My truck should be able to handle it. I'd imagine such a trailer, with tools, tires, and parts, would weigh about what my backhoe trailer does, and these 4 cars total about 2-4k lbs less than the backhoe.

Hmmm.... Did Cobra Dave say something about possibly wanting to sell the rig he's using?

If you want to fly down to Topeka or Omaha and share the SHO, lemme know. I'm not having my dad or son go with on either of these trips because it wouldn't be as fun for them on cold tracks. That's the excuse I'm using anyway. Wouldn't mind having a friend at the track, but want to do a couple of events with no family. <g>

There will be something like 8 events at both tracks combined this year plus I want to get up to your track once with a Mustang.
