there is a direct correlation/relationship between the overall stock market and the economy

Btw, you dont need to go far: Chinese stock at 1/3rd of 2008 value while the economy is said to be growing 8-10 % per year while DAX is at all time high while Germans just went through a shallow recession and just posted a flat 1Q GPD. Thats almost a perfect inverse correlation :-)
