strip the socket A interface, add a memory controller
and the Hyper transport bus. XP4000+ by xmas.

Isn't that less than an Opteron? Barton is just Athlon with 512K L2 and Opteron is Athlon with 1Meg of L2 ( plus 2 additional pipeline stages) plus aHT. So what you suggest is a step backwards.
