"I strongly suspect that's why Linus Torvalds has a Mermon."

Probably. The reality is that there isn't much low hanging fruit with respect to x86 code. So Intel would be especially anxious in pushing this on some. If they really have an advantage, how about pushing Mermon on Mr. C++? Bjorn is attached to a major university. Which has some strong computer engineering links. Heck, I would be willing to sacrifice myself on the altar of Intel in exchange for some funding...

Not totally, I need to be respectable. But AMD has been generous, we have several large AMD machines. All they have to do is fund my PHd. Cheap in the face of Tom's Hardware Group. Probably close to zero when compared to Dell.

Ah, hell, reality means that even I can't prostitute myself to support this. 3 issues didn't buy AMD a whole lot over the PIII. AMD has done a lot on their equivalent of micro op fusion. It helps, but we are talking about incremental and not quantum improvements. Sure, on certain benchmarks incredible improvements can be seen, but the average case sees only small improvements. If that.

But still, for an appropriate grant, I'd do my best. And really, the local economy is such that $20 an hour would throw me into the upper ranks. Let's talk.
