FBDIMMS themselves add something in the order of an additional 8W per DIMM and need active cooling.

How much power do you think a regular DDR or DDR2 DIMM
dissipates?

I find it very hard to believe that the FBD buffer chip
consumes 8W. Also keep in mind that much of the
power the FBD buffer consumes is power some other
chip(s) doesn't because it no longer needs to drive a
whole bunch of capacitive memory devices so the
power increase at the system level is less than you
imply.
