Re: So AMD does program something into the device that indicates what Tcasemax is. This seems very odd to me, as it seems more like a binning parameter than an "FYI" type of parameter. I would still like to know how they expect go get more money for HE parts when somebody can just buy standard and sort for lowest Tcasemax numbers, and RMA the rest.
The first note seems to suggest that AMD intends to use it as a thermal trip value. This way, board designers (ODMs, for example), can build a board level system management device that trips CPU power if it exceeds Tcase,max. Since Intel designs their own chipsets, they have the power to implement this in a more integrated fashion, and then exclude it from the public CPU registers; but since AMD depends on 3rd parties for chipsets, they need to keep this as an external spec for the system builders. They would implement a BIOS routine that reads the CPU register, then programs an external system management chip to cut the power supply if it is exceeded.
