TV star Pamela Anderson urges Loblaw to label eggs from caged hens

VANCOUVER (CP) - TV star Pamela Anderson is continuing her campaign for animal welfare by urging Loblaw Cos. to label eggs that come from caged hens.

Canadian-born Anderson, who will be the parade marshal at Saturday's Grey Cup parade in Vancouver, has written to John Lederer, president of Loblaw (TSX:L), Canada's largest supermarket chain.

Anderson previously spoke out against the treatment of chickens sold by Kentucky Fried Chicken outlets.

"I would like to support the request of the Vancouver Humane Society and the Canadian Coalition for Farm Animals for Loblaw to label all battery eggs as 'eggs from caged hens,'" Anderson said in the letter to Lederer, released Thursday.

"There is no reason why Loblaw cannot put up signs or label the shelves at point of purchase. This will allow consumers to decide for themselves whether or not they want to support this cruelty."

The Vancouver Humane Society and the Canadian Coalition for Farm Animals recently released video and photographic footage of conditions on an egg farm in Ontario that is owned by a veterinarian and supplies the domestic market.

In the video, hens are shown in a "battery" of wire cages, five to seven hens a cage, with the cages stacked five high. The birds suffer from severe feather-loss and are covered in feces.
