Westport Innovations Inc. announced the availability of a compressed natural gas bi-fuel system for Ford F-450 and F-550 Super Duty chassis cab trucks.
Available for order through Westport-authorized Ford dealerships, the trucks will feature the same Westport WiNG bi-fuel system already found on Ford F-250 and F-350 trucks.
The F-450 and F-550 models will be built at the same Westport facility in Kentucky assembly line as the other trucks, Westport said in a statement.
For a starting price of $9,500, the system is designed for Ford's 6.8-liter V10 gasoline engine, and offers a combined fuel range of approximately 650 miles with the gas engine operating at nine miles-per-gallon with a 40-gallon gasoline tank and with onboard CNG capacity of 42 gasoline gallons equivalent, Westport said.
The trucks are designed to switch to gasoline-only operation when the CNG is depleted, Westport said.
