I've used both methods - When using auto sum, you just highlight the cells you want included. One benefit is it eliminate key strokes, which probably speeds things up a bit.

I've tried to use autosum within two or three different spread sheets and it doesn't work but using the = sign is fine.

I'm working on a spreadsheet now and I don't remember how to make it so that the column that I want to put the date in is automatic.

I think I used to know how to do that.
