#116881 RE: Tenchu #116870

Huh? You were talking about QCOM's supposed advantages of being a fabless company, which you said allowed them to have higher profit margins.

But being fabless isn't the reason that they are. The fact that they were once an IP-only company that made their revenues almost exclusively by licensing is the reason.

Now they're actually producing components of their own (though foundries, of course). The margins here are not any better than those of Intel.

Where did I say anything about fabless being an advantage for QCOM?

I actually said that there's a trend towards using inexpensive, customizable IP (i.e. ARM, Android), and QCOM is partaking to great success.

I can't help but notice that, even though QCOM is licensing & customizing ARM designs and using outside foundries for manufacturing, that you all but acknowledge that QCOM can get margins in the Intel-range...

It's no wonder that Samsung, who not only licenses and customizes ARM designs, but also manufactures their own designs with their own fabs and builds them into their own end-products (along with Android(!)), and is hugely successful.

(And meanwhile, Samsung is actually manufacturing processors for their biggest competitor, i.e. Apple, and is still kicking ass.)
