The other thing that tends to happen is that as the amount of horsepower increases folks like app creators find cool new things to do with it - driving more demand for the box with the horsepower.

Yeah this has only been happening for nearly 40 years now.

We have been hearing self selected computing geniuses ask
"why would anyone need this new expensive Intel processor,
everyone's current PC is fast enough" ever since the 386.

Uhh, that was then. We won't see those kind of improvements in the future. Improvements will be the same compute power in smaller power envelopes.
