Notes from today’s CABG CC:
The main take home is that CABG has not yet decided what to do to fix the problem they are having with occlusions which halted the European clinical trials. They are seeing early occlusion, not late thrombosis.
CABG has $33M in cash, and expects a burn rate of $6-8M next year, unless things go really well and they resume clinical trials with full vigor. If they can identify a fix, animal trials could conceivably begin in 3 months or so. Manny said they are considering the following possible fixes:
1) Open up the flow limiter (note, this means more blood flow to the vena cava and less to the bypassed vessel(s))
2) Change the drug regimen again (unspecified)
3) Change the implantation procedure (unspecified)
I suspect there is a fluid-mechanical design flaw with this device. Maybe they can solve it, maybe not, but to me it doesn’t really sound like something that can be fixed with a blood-compatible coating. For now I’ll just keep an eye on CABG and be glad that I haven’t invested in them.
