Sure, stop losses can backfire. That is why mine are all mental. But really, for every time a stop hits and then reverses, how many times does the stock just keep going down and end up dead forever?
I think 10% is too much for most stocks and for sure in short term trading.
I've seen more than a few people lose millions in the market, quickly and recently at that. When I pointed out that stop losses would have helped they just look blank. "What's a stop loss?"
The thought of taking a small loss now rather than having a catastrophic wipeout later was just too painful.
