The dominant rock type outcropping within the Blue Wing Mountains is mainly hornfels with high graphite content. The hornfels is believed to have formed when a granite pluton intruded a sequence of oil-bearing shale. The intrusion has divided the Blue Wing Mountains into two portions, a western wing and an eastern wing. The highest elevation in the area is Black Mountain at 2017 meters.
