$USGT On crystals freshly broken from matrix, the graphite coating tends to mask the underlying chiastolite, but imparts a submetallic luster to some crystal surfaces. Many crystals when first freed from matrix are coated by graphite, but weathering mechanically removes the graphite from the outer surfaces. Graphite is immune to chemical reagents and thus mechanical cleaning offers the only way to remove it from chiastolite.
