PITTSBURGH, Pen. — The shale gas drilling industry is trying to decide how to move potentially toxic wastewater across rivers and lakes to disposal sites across the county, according to The Tennessean.

There have been discussions of using barges to move the wastewater, but the U.S. Coast Guard must first decide whether it’s safe.

“It may be hazardous,” said Commander Michael Roldan, chief of the Coast Guard’s Hazardous Material Division.

Roldan recently said the waste can’t currently be shipped by barge, noted the article.

It is unclear when the Coast Guard will know if the wastewater can eventually be shipped by barge as other organizations, including the Environmental Protection Agency, are still weighing in.

The White House is likely to establish a committee to review the draft proposal, stated the article.
