And LEt me explain how the motorcycle taxis work there. First, all areas in Bangkok and the other large cities are split geographically. Each motorcycle taxi group 'owns' certain areas of town. Guess who owns the motorcycle taxis therE? Their equivilant of our Mafia. They control the whole thing, which is basically how the whole coutnry works anyway.
Most fares are less than $1. And the funny thing that in the larger cities even though they have small denomination coins, they are not used very much. Everyhting is rounded.

Let's see how this would work in the U.S..... as an example, if they used our coins, most people would use, quarters. They don't have many pennies, nickles and dimes in circulation.,... they ar enot used much.
So if you take a metered taxi (moto cycle) first you only use them for short runs.... maybe 300 meters.... no one uses them for long runs, that is not thier prupose. So most fares are quoted as "10 Baht, 20 Baht or 30 Baht.... 30 Baht is $1.
Let me continue.... because this is controlled by peoplel that have a lot at stake what you will find out is that the Thai Govt. has no control and no one will listen to them. Why? Because those same politicians control it all. All under the table. So why would they want to bring it above board?
THey don't and won't. Even if they do, they will not let a "farang" (foriegner) make money on it. It's how it works there. Thailand is for Thais and the sooner these yo-yo's find out, the better for the investors because there is NEVER going to be a meter on a Motorcycle taxi.
In fact, most regular taxis try to quote a price and say "no meter" ..... they prefer it that way.
Corruption in Thailand? Google it.
How about when they were build thier BTS system? (above ground train, much like the subway trains)... they bout ONE rail car form a European company... then copied it and made all thier own internally. SO if Siemens or whover can't crack the market, do you think these knucklheads can?
