Yeah I'm surprised the judge hasn't been changed for possible conflict of interest here.... he shouldn't even be involved...

Anyone check his past to see if ever a 'questionable' decision similar?

Seems like either he wanted to go above and beyond the rules of the courtroom to find out the background story to a case, or he really does want to protect acquaintances either out of morality or partisanship.
