Basically, they are not bad human analogues and since many companies breed their own rats and mice, they can breed rats and mice that are genetically identical (or very similar) to reduce the number of variables that the researchers have to contend with when testing a new drug. Also, with this type of drug, a brain is a brain and they are testing the effectiveness of this drug on brains in general and the results from the tests from mice and rats would most likely scale to human application.
