This was in essence an experiment confirming experimentally the uncertainty principle (in "theory", in a Bose Einstein condensate, not only are all the particles at the lowest possible energy, but they are all at the same energy (the essence of a BEC), the experiment showed a spread of "energies" equal to h-bar, proving the uncertainty principle (that states, in essence that the product of momentum and position (delatp * deltax cannot be smaller than h bar, namely you cannot determine both the momentum (energy) and position of a particle better than this product.) Zero point energy is a completely different concept, it claims that there is "hidden" and usable energy in every point in space, the problem is that till now, no one could extract that energy, but people are still working on it.
