>>My point is that in any event, the determination of "when life starts" is a religious decision, and not one that can be imposed on all.<<
Zeev, I respectfully disagree with your interpretation of the soul issue in scripture. I suspect that some day this interpretation will be looked at in the same light as the various verses that were/are used to condone slavery.
The problem with saying it is a "religious decision" is that a leader can then legitimately say his/her "religion" teaches that a Jew is not a person until they renounce Judaism, etc. This is exactly what Hitler did.
It's very difficult to deny the preborn baby is alive when it is kicking inside the womb, the heart is beating, and the brain is active.
Someone may say a child is not human until they are outside the womb, so they can be mercilessly chopped to bits 5 minutes before birth. I am hard pressed to distinguish such action from another who says a Jewish baby (or American, or female, etc.) is not a human until they are 3 days old, or 3 years old, or 25 years old, or 100 years old and therefore are fair game for the sword.
I regret the Hitler reference, but it does continually come to my mind when I consider how the various "pro-choice" positions classify human and non-human.
Respectfully yours - I cease and desist from the issue. You may have the last word. Please forgive any offense.
