I saw a great documentary on the History of Religions on A&E the other night. One discovery in particular emphasises on man's manipulation of the sacred writings. Apparently, king Ptolemy (II?) disapproved of the circulation (content) of Christ's teachings written by his disciples at the time, and quickly outlawed the text. What is now the New Testament is Ptolemy's edited version of the New Testament. He found it at his leisure to make whatever changes he deemed fit.

Adding support to your statement, the variances of the bible interpretations is evident as we have so many subdivisions of Christianity. Lutheran, Baptist, Mormon, etc... and not least Catholicism.
