No more tilling for me, except when cutting through grass to establish a new garden bed. I figure the tilling just kills the worms plus interrupts the soil composition.

Today I built three small raised beds, which are located in poor soil. To nourish the soil, I did the following. After building the beds out of bricks, I dug out the dirt to a depth of one foot and added shredded leaves and grass clippings. I then covered this combination with limestone. Finally I added back the dirt and sprinkled Azomite and limestone on the surface level.

I will be building six more beds and will follow the same procedure. Building beds can sometimes be a pain in the neck for some people, but I like the building and reclaiming of the soil with the leaves. I will follow this procedure for another five years; if your saw my soil, you would know why I do what I do.

I bought five bales of straw last week. I will spread the straw on all of the beds and let them rot under the snow and rains this winter. Next year I will be adding the partially rotted straw to my four composters.

The straw and wood chips seem to be an attraction for worms. This spring I will be adding another layer of wood chips to my garden paths plus around my raspberry plants.

I'm on a quest to improve my soil and to attract worms at any cost!

I am the one standing in the garden picture.
