That's not true. During the Vietnam War reporters were allowed essentially unfettered access to the troops and the front lines for long stretches of time. In fact, prior to the current disaster, Vietnam was the last time such access was given.

What does that have to do with anything? Reporters are both embedded and freelance in Iraq. Reporters travelled with troops, and worked freelance in Viet Nam.
