Agreed. They are truly remarkable. One title might run something like, "How could such smart people do such stupid things", or some such thing.
I don't doubt that they are "smart." I just think that they are so full of personal ambition and pride that they can't think straight. I said this a week or two ago: they have misread Machiavellian boldness, and have convinced themselves that anything is possible with the military might of the US behind them, including remaking a nation-state (Iraq, in this case) which never should have been a unified country to begin with, whose peoples have no democratic traditions, and aren't ready for that form of govt. The Founders who they pay such lip-service to would blush at this stupidity and at the extravagance of the hybris which underlies this attempt at squaring a circle.
