Our family cat when I was growing up was an incredible Siamese. He was originally indoor/outdoor until we moved to CA. He lived to be almost 18 years old and was pretty active up until the last couple of weeks when he went into kidney failure.
I grew up in a rural area with lots of mice. He was good at capturing them, but usually didn't kill them. Sometimes he'd bring them to us as gift or to show-off his mouser skills.
Several years ago I had an indoor/outdoor Maine Coon who played fetch and could catch balls in mid-air. She had a cat door for daytime use and twice I came home from work to find an uninjured bird flying around my house trying to get out. Both finally escaped and flew off. She would leap up to catch birds in the same way she caught balls, but never killed one. Cats can carry their kittens and even their prey very gently with their mouths. Sadly, she got bone cancer and died at only 11.
My two cats now would love to be allowed outdoors during the day, but it's just too dangerous where I currently live. I sometimes take them out on a harness. At least they have each other and lots of windows to look out when I'm not home.
