Bank of America released a report saying the Fed will nearly double its balance sheet to $5 trillion within the next two years. (It's currently $2.8 trillion.) ?
The report estimates the Fed will own more than 33% of the entire mortgage market by 2014. And over the same time frame, "Fed ownership across the [six- to 30-year] portion of the Treasury curve is likely to reach about 50% by end of 2013 and an average of 65% by end of 2014."
The result will be a huge inflation… the likes of which will push gold to $3,350 an ounce and oil to $190 a barrel, the bank's analysts project

……in 2006 (Bernanke’s first year at the helm of the Fed) the average weekly earnings (pre-tax) of a worker in the U.S. could purchase 332 loafs of bread, 265 cartons of eggs, 109 gallons of milk, 141 gallons of gasoline and 3,170 KWhs of electricity.
Since then, the cost of these staples has soared, while incomes have barely moved and the value of our homes has declined by one-fifth.
Six years later and average weekly incomes can only buy 250 loafs of bread (-25%), 187 cartons of eggs (-30%), 101 gallons of milk (-7%), 94 gallons of gasoline (-34%) and 2,644 KWhs of electricity (-17%).

19-Sep – In an article that appeared at FT.com yesterday entitled Bond sceptic caught between devil and ECB, a scene from the classic Goethe play Faust is recounted:
In early scenes from Goethe’s tragedy, Mephistopheles (the 666 devil) persuades the heavily indebted Holy Roman Emperor to print fiat paper money – notionally backed by gold that had not yet been mined – to solve an economic crisis, with initially happy results until more and more money is printed and rampant inflation ensues.
I remember reading Faust many years ago in college, but must admit that I had no recollection of this particular scene. However, Bundesbank President Jens Weidmann apparently recalls the scene well and makes a comparisons to recent ECB actions, to which he was the lone dissenter.
{b]In a speech in Frankfurt yesterday, Weidmann said, “The state in Faust Part Two is able at first to rid itself of its debts while consumer demand grows strongly and fuels a strong recovery. But this later develops into inflation and the monetary system is destroyed by rapid currency depreciation.”
As central banks around the world heap accommodation on top of accommodation — the subject of today’s earlier commentary — perhaps those bankers can fall back on the (and I’m really showing my age here) Geraldine Jones line from old Flip Wilson variety show, “The 666 devil made me do it!”
