Pentium II launched at 300MHz at $1981, but it had two downbins, one at 233MHz and $636 and the other at 266MHz and $775. AMD's parts in 1997 were K6-233MHz at $469, 200MHz at $349, and 166MHz at $244. So I would agree that Intel had a decent lead during this period. Unfortunately, there is no information on price drops, but this at least gives a competitive snapshot around the time when these parts launched.
