Prescott was designed for frequency and hit the power wall, limiting the performance potential of what could have been a good performer. There's no doubt that good engineering went into Prescott, even though the planning could not make it work with the power limits in a standard cost-effective PC. I think most people acknowledge this far.
Intel's next generation is designed with power efficiency in mind, and it's based loosely off of a wildly successful design that has already won accolades in the mobile space. With the pipeline depth known to be 14 stages, one can draw reasonable conclusions about the direction the design has taken. With almost everything in the design enhanced or improved, it seems pretty obvious to me that it will be a winner.
But let's consider other strengths besides the CPU that Intel has been building, which includes their platform design strategy, their research in features such as system management (i.e. IAMT), and their branding plans, such as a revised Centrino push and the push into Digital Home called Viiv. They are also far ahead in their 65nm ramp, and some rumors suggest that their future nodes are in good shape relative to controlling leakage.
With all this said, I think it is perfectly obvious that they are not going to strike out like they did last year.
