Have farmers forgotten advantage of rotating crops w/e.g., alfalfa? I was once co-owner of 30 acres of land atop the Oglalla-reservoir way north of Kansas in S.Dak. We harvested 4 crops of alfalfa, useful for livestock feed, in 1 year---the alfalfa roots went at least 8 feet deep to reach the reservoir. Perhaps MON and DD should concentrate on developing corn, etc with such depth of root?

Planting the next year crop of grain over the harvested alfalfa w/o tilling should be child's play today. And the alfalfa does help restore nitrogen to the soil, not to mention organic matter.
