The work is performed by the seismic company but many aspects of the shoot have to be done by the company that contracts it out. You simply DO NOT do seismic over the entire block. You have to specify where you want it done and how you want it done. Usually you would do a larger area of 2D followed by months of processing and analysis and then do 3D over a much smaller area to pinpoint drilling locations. But the 3D would, once again, take months of processing and analysis. The amount of data involved in doing seismic is enormous. Large super computers are often needed. Often the seismic company will do the shoot and they will turn the data over to a processing company who processes the data. And then the processed data is analyzed internally. It is a multistep process. And those thing that all it takes is phone call really don't understand the complexities of doing seismic, processing it and analyzing the results. In many ways, drilling is far easier. Especially onshore. You have one location instead of 100's of square miles of rugged terrain.
