I think that there is a slight process of "guilt by association" going on, people still remember Falwell and Robertson post 9/11 speeches when they blamed the calamity on homosexual and other "sinful" living of some of the population. Their speeches, then, were indeed hateful, so hateful that they had to come up with retractment.

I agree: don't think it is hatred per se, but rather intolerance and the inability to consider the possibility of something outside of your rigid system of beliefs. In truth, if Jesus walked among us today, I don't think he would live as many of you choose to do ("by the book"); I think he would adapt to the times. I think he would be open to change, as so much knowledge has become available in 2000 years. Religious belief should be a progressive, dynamic thing that evolves with the time, while at the same time maintaining its basic tenets.
