Presumably the US would then be happy to relinquish its self-proclaimed role as World policeman. I agree that the UN has become overly biased towards the third world, in some people's eyes. Maybe we shouln't be announcing new defence spending (UK just raised its Iraq war fund to Stg1.75bn).
It is not hard to see that less wealthy countries view us as arrogant. The EU, if it ever gets it act together (please exclude the UK 'cos we don't fit), will have an economy 1.2x the US, and we are no better.

i'll take a crack at this. the position is doled out alphabetically; iran withdrew, leaving iraq in that role.

yah, our money is better spent dropping a couple hundred tons of military hardware on them ...
