IMPORTANT: SPREAD WORD; Bush's speech on MONDAY, delivered at 10 am, as Katrina was lashing away at the Gulf Coast ... here's the link ....

http://biz.yahoo.com/prnews/050829/dcm039.html?.v=19

In the speech, which is focused on many other things (which shows he was focused on other things, not on Katrina), note the two paragraphs on Katrina and what he says specifically ...

"I know my fellow citizens here in Arizona and across the country are saying our prayers for those affected by the -- Hurricane Katrina. Our Gulf Coast is getting hit and hit hard. I want the folks there on the Gulf Coast to know that the federal government is prepared to help you when the storm passes. I want to thank the governors of the affected regions for mobilizing assets prior to the arrival of the storm to help citizens avoid this devastating storm.

"I urge the citizens there in the region to continue to listen to the local authorities. Don't abandon your shelters until you're given clearance by the local authorities. Take precautions because this is a dangerous storm. When the storm passes, the federal government has got assets and resources that we'll be deploying to help you. In the meantime, America will pray -- pray for the health and safety of all our citizens.

Hmmm... don't leave the shelters? And the Feds will have the assets?

Now they are singing a different tune. Now the spin is -- why didn't the locals get them out of there? And now they are saying it wasn't the Feds job to have the resources there for these folks.

Yeah, right.

Give me a break. It was the mayor who started the politicizing of the disaster, on Tuesday! How was it possible for the Feds to reach the scene in force on Tuesday? Even the shining example of Dutch Zeeland flood response in 1953 took 36 hours for NATO resource to arrive from West Germany, which was only 50 miles from Zeeland. 50 miles from New Orleans is still Lousiana proper and parts of hurricane devastated MS and AL, where the hurricane actually landed. If you really want to look for a parallel to the Dutch response, the Queen (the Dutch national government being only 15 miles away, more or less equivalent to our city or state government) and her teenager Princess were on the levee the day after the storm hit; where was the mayor of New Orleans the day after? In Baton Rouge! holding press conference lambasting the lack of federal aid (which could not possibly have arrived by then) and advocating the commandeering of all private bus operators across the country, buses that would take over a week to get to NOLA, while NOLA's own school buses sat unorganized until Thursday!

We are a nation of in-accountability when it comes to government. No one was fired after 9/11 and no one will be fired after this mess.

I never said anything deragotory regarding the police, firemen, etc. on the ground. It was the city planners who were responsible, and their lack of action in getting supplies to the superdome ahead of time. even this boy scout knows to " be prepared"
