From Lynx
2. There appears to be discrepences in how the Dodge Ram tests results were derived. What was the baseline used to determine the results of the test?

JG The baseline waas determined by the publishe d data on what the Dodge fuel milage is.

KG EPA on the window of a vehicle registers a CItya nd Highway number, the Dodge being a ¾ ton truck doesn’t have to post that info. You have to use other means to determine the baseline. SO we did an exact, side-by side testing with each vehicle to the same thing…

JG ..conducted by Viewpoint Systms, a firm being used now by GM

KG We didn’t own a dyn o then and there was none in NYS at that time. We did a real-world test. Something you and I would be more comfortable with. We physically measured the gas. We get people questioning the length of the test. We went 18 miles, not the 7.5 miles of the EPA test. We did the test at 5mph increments, both vehicles side-by-side from 10 to 30 mph. We knw our test was more severe because on the test vehicle, whichc was a ½ ton Hemme, gas V*, of equivalent power and engine size, gass vs diesel. Our vehicle was heavier by 2,000 lbs! The window sticker on that Dodge 4x4 was 13 mpg city driving. If you look in our files, it got 9.9 miles per gallon as an ave. Our TOVC equipped Dodge, same day, same driver, got over 18 mpg. It’s in the filings.

JG It’s important to note, that typically a heavier vehicle gets less milage than a lighter vehicle! So we loaded the test in favor of the standard vehcle. The test was loaded against TOVC.

KG When you take 2 comparable engines of the same size, a diesel engine with a manual engine and the other a gas with a manual will get 30% better gas mile with the diesel. An automatic, you lose half of that.

JG Know why?? The Torque Converter!!!

KG Our target has been the automatic because that what is most used in the US.
