The two chips can sit next to each other easily. They can be combined into a single multi chip package, but its a bit costly. They can be directly bonded to each other, face to face (do the digital processing on the silicon, do the radio on the GaAs) and its a bit more expensive still. Many manufacturers offer this capability but its not done in enormous volume as far as I know. Combining the digital and radio function onto a single chip like GaAs is easier and cheaper because there are fewer parts, but putting both functions on a single chip may demand compromises so you don't get the best possible digital processor or the best possible radio. But it will be simpler and more compact which may be very important.
