the stupidity of that glass-half-empty article is exemplified by first complaining about genetically engineered crops, then being astonished that the last known specimen of a plant in the wild was given major measures to preserve. apparently they don't understand the difference between $15.98 specimens that might be genetically engineered and a pristine wild genome.
I guess the millions that receive insulin derived from genetic engineering would prefer using insulin derived from pig pancreas material at many orders of magnitude higher in price.
Genetic engineering needs to be regulated, but it already has reduced the need for pesticides and herbicides which are much more harmful than any potential mutant dandelions. Strawberries bred to be less susceptible to frost hasn't exactly altered the human condition, other than having more strawberries.
Fearing genetic engineering is just a variant of #1, fear of the end of the world. we have been genetic engineering things for millenia, it is called artificial selection, only now we can accellerate the process via genetic recombination techniques.
Ever since agriculture and the domestication of animals and plants began man has been modifying their genetic make-up by selective breeding (e.g. broccoli, Brussels sprouts and cabbage came from a single species of mustard) or the creation of Dalmatians or chihuahuas.
Can there be ill effects? perhaps, but none beyond the limits of technology to correct via the same methods used to create them. The "godzilla" fears aren't particularly founded, but yet many people have been instilled with fear about GE, often with the statement that we shouldn't be playing "god".
The real sad thing is that human overpopulation is making advances in agriculture a necessity to prevent crashes... a bigger threat to the earth is large families... e.g. LDS people believing one needs to have 5 children to make it to the inner sanctum of the church.
I know there are counter-arguments to some of my opinions, such as that genetically engineered production of enzymes for laundry soap led to some people showing an allergy to them. To that sort of stuff i say, hey, testing and elimination or avoidance is an easy solution. Sort of like poison ivy needs to be avoided. Testing and analysis has always been part of selective breeding.
