Sunnis In Iraq Are More Than 42%

By Ali Al-Hail

Al-Jazeerah, August 14, 2005

Introduction:

On daily basis, US media repeat that, Sunnis are 20%. This article demonstrates that, 15 years ago the Sunnis were, 32% – 37 %. For the truth, this ritual statistical fact has to be clarified. The source on which this article relies, as regard with this ratio is, “The CIA World Factbook, U.S. Department of State, Area Handbook of the US Library of Congress, Obtained During 1990 On Iraqi Population”.

Since 1990 however, this percentage rose up to more than 42% according to Saleh Al-Mutlag, Secretary General of the Iraqi Council For the National Dialogue (Al Jazeera TV, July 30th, 2005).

The 42% and more proportion of Sunnis in Iraq is, more significantly, incorporated in the LATEST UN POPULATION DIVISION DATA (2005) (see: http://esa.un.org/unpp/index.asp?panel=1). Further, Carolyne Howley, the BBC World Service TV correspondent in Baghdad stated this calculation of Iraqi Sunnis in Iraq (BBC News, Live from Baghdad, June 14th, 2005).

For the sake of argument, this article considers the CIA reference cited above as a balanced statistical fact. Although, obtained by the CIA during 1990. It manifests clearly, the percentage of Iraqi-Arabs, which is, 75% - 80%.

Whilst Kurdish 15%-20%, Turkoman, Assyrian or other 5%, and, Muslim 97% (Shi'i 60%-65%, Sunni 32%-37%), while Christian or other 3% (The CIA World Factbook, U.S. Department of State, Area Handbook of the US Library of Congress).

Shi’is, Sunnis, and Kurds

Hence, Putting Sunni Arabs after Kurds, is, a plotted conspiracy, and, enormously, manipulative. The marginalization of Sunni Arabs, is, undoubtedly, against the national unity of all Iraqis (see www.aljazeerah.info , June 23rd issue). The exposure of Saddam’s photos in his underwear, by the Tabloid paper of the Sun, was perceived as an element of the marginalization of Sunnis in Iraq. Furthermore, it was meant, to have sent a clear message, to other Arab, and, Muslim leaders. Either, you obey, or, else, you may well be, in the same situation, ONE DAY.

Whoever the perpetrators, whose obnoxious, and, loathsome action, was, responsible for targeting Iraqis, were, certainly, aiming at planting the seeds for a civil war to be erupted in Iraq. For instance, Shi’i leaders such as Moqtada Al-Sadr, and, Sunni clerics, such as, Abduassalam Al-Kubaisi, had frequently, stated that, only Israel, the United States, and, Britain, are, the beneficiaries from creating pretexts, for escalations amongst the people of Iraq.

Shi’is and Sunnis Suffered From The Past

Therefore, Iraqis are urged to brush aside their religious and political differences. These are, extremely, irrelevant at least for the time being, as the country of all Iraqis, is, in a huge turmoil.

Both Sunni, and, Shi’i Muslim clerics, ought to rise above the past and remember that, both sectors, were, victims of the ousted regime. It is categorically, unpatriotic on the part of some Shi’i Muslim leaders, to assert from merely, moral point of view that, Iraq was dominated by Sunnis, until the collapse of the Iraqi government in April 2003. As a matter of fact Saddam’s men and women during his reign were practically secular. They were neither, Sunnis, nor, were Shi’is. Though, in theory by and large, Saddam’s circle, could be described as cross sectarian. It is a commonplace fact, in Iraq however, that both Shi’is, and, Sunnis, beyond that very circle, suffered dearly, from the regime.

All Iraqis Are Citizens Of Iraq:

Therefore, influential leaders in both communities that, represent approximately, 85% of Iraqi population should unite together. They should thump marketed theories that, Shi’is and Sunnis hate one another. This has been going for some time now, in order to reinforce the status quo.

Russia: Use of force to resolve Iran nuclear row 'dangerous'

MOSCOW (AFP) Aug 17, 2005
Russia cautioned the United States on Wednesday against considering the use of force to contain Iran's nuclear programme, saying this would be "dangerous" and would unleash "serious consequences."

"We consider that it would be counter-productive and dangerous to use force, the serious consequences of which would be barely predictable," the foreign ministry said in a statement clearly aimed at US President George W. Bush's recent assertion that force is an option.

The statement urged that the crisis over Iran's insistence on producing its own nuclear fuel be resolved "exclusively through expert consultations and diplomatic negotiations."

The Russian position echoes a call by German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder over the weekend for military force to be ruled out as an option in Iran, saying it was "extremely dangerous."

On Friday, Bush refused to rule out military action, saying: "all options are on the table."

"The use of force is the last option for any president. You know we have used force in the recent past to secure our country," he told Israeli television.

Russia is building a nuclear power station in Iran and will supply the plant's nuclear fuel, but says it does want Iran to develop any military capability.

Last week Moscow came out in support of a resolution by the UN nuclear watchdog, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), urging Iran to resume its moratorium on nuclear fuel production.
