The markets closed out the trading session in the red today as an early market rally sparked by optimism over the economy was wiped out by soaring oil prices and a weak forcast from Cisco Systems (Nasdaq: CSCO RT$).
Volume was steady with 2.17 billion shares trading on the NYSE and 1.82 billion on the Nasdaq. Advancers outpaced decliners today by a margin of 19:14 on the NYSE and trailed them 17:13 on the Nasdaq.
In individual stories, Transmeta (Nasdaq: TMTA RT$) closed 27.36% higher after reporting Q2 EPS 7 cents better than estimates and provided upbeat guidance. On the downside, Atari (Nasdaq: ATAR RT$) closed 39.09% lower after reporting Q1 EPS 11 cents lower than estimates, and revenues fell 77.6%.
Tomorrow, traders will be watching for data on Retail Sales, Retail Sales ex-auto, Initial Claims, and Business Inventories. Retail Sales, Retail Sales ex-auto and Initial Claims are due to hit the wires at 8:30 A..M. Business Inventories are expected to at 10:00 A.M.
